Having been raised on a dairy farm in middle Tennessee it was natural that during high school I was active in the 4H Club and the Future Farmers of America. I married my high school sweetheart, Sandra, and we have one son, Andy, a wonderful daughter-in-law, Stephanie, and three beautiful granddaughters.
After high school I joined the U. S. Marine Corps and served in Viet Nam where I was with Mike Co., 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, and 3rd Marine Division. After the Marines, I attended Middle Tennessee State University, majored in education with minors in aerospace and biology and graduated in 3 years with honors.
I became interested in flying after watching F-4s making their bomb runs and then fly off. In 1973 I obtained my commercial pilots license and became manager of Mid-State Flight School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Sandra and I then moved to Dallas, Texas where I took a pilots position and then on to Birmingham, Alabama, where I started a career with Caterpillar, Inc. as a corporate pilot. After three years of flying for the company, I was approached by the company president and offered a sales position. After the first year of hard work, I was honored as one of the top sales agents in the U.S. and Canada.
I resigned from being a Cat salesman to join Braniff Airlines, and in 1980 was furloughed. Once again I became a corporate pilot. One flight brought me to Hilton Head Island. My brother, John, who was already here, talked to us about moving to the Island. He was involved in real estate so I then became a real estate agent with Lighthouse Realty. Two years later Braniff Airlines filed for bankruptcy. Because we enjoyed the Island so much, we decided to stay and not pursue a career in the airlines any further.
In 1986 I founded Charter One Realty & Marketing. I wanted a company built on honesty and integrity with professional realtors who had the know-how to achieve the goals of buyers and sellers. I feel this is at the very heart of this profession. Twenty-five years later Charter One Realty & Marketing has become the leading real estate company on Hilton Head Island. With 5 offices and over 75 agents, we have proven my philosophy.
Under the Charter One Realty "umbrella", the Reed Real Estate Group was formed. When my son, Andy, and nephews, Tom and Rich joined the company, it seemed practical to join together and work as one team. This has worked out very well. There is always a Reed available when someone calls to help with their real estate needs.
I continue to enjoy flying airplanes, boating, fishing, golf and travelling
